About BARG
The Berkshire Archaeology Research Group (BARG) conducts archaeological
research in Berkshire and is open to anyone with an interest in archaeology. If you
combine a curiosity about mans past with an interest in working both outdoors and
indoors in pursuit of evidence by archaeological methods, this could be the Group for you.
BARG (formerly know as the BFRG or Berkshire Field Research
Group) was founded in 1958 and has an active and growing membership drawn from all areas
of the county. We aim to uncover evidence of human activity in Berkshire across a
broad period from prehistory right through to the post medieval and modern periods.
BARG also organises regular field trips both within Berkshire and further
afield. By joining a BARG field trip you will gain a greater understanding of the
areas rich archaeological heritage. Recent trips have included Saxon sites in NW
Berkshire, Roman and medieval Winchester, and prehistoric sites at Cranbourne Chase in Dorset.
We publish a regular Newsletter, In the Field, which is free to members and contains
reports on the recent fieldwork, plus updates on fieldwork opportunities and upcoming
courses and lectures.
BARG has carried out research using a wide range of techniques, including excavation,
fieldwalking, hedgerow surveys, and earthwork surveys. We conduct post excavation work and
in conjunction with landowners we monitor the condition of known archaeological sites.
